Looking Over Your Hospital Bill Carefully
So you just had elective surgery on your old pitching shoulder from college. You arrive home after 2 weeks of being laid up in a hospital bed eating sustenance that has a hard time be classified as food. You go to your mailbox and POW! There is the hospital bill waiting for you to return home. Taking it out and looking it over you realize there are roughly $4000 dollars worth of tests and doctor’s visits that you don’t even remember going through or let alone meeting. So what do you do? What recourse do you have?
Simple. You can go directly to the source. When you determine there are mistakes on your hospital statement going back to the hospital and talking to someone about is your best bet. All of the major US hospitals have their own billing department with their own billing coordinators. These individuals will gladly sit down with you and go over your bill, line by line until you fully understand every charge.
The hospital staff is not evil (although waking someone up every two hours in the middle of the night to draw blood might actually qualify); they are not here to steal your money (again, no comments from the peanut gallery) they are hard working people like you and I. Often times hospitals are overcrowded and understaffed. As a result many staff members do not have the time to double check their entries that will end up as charges on your hospital bill. Therefore it is important to keep this in mind; going into the hospital billing office with this attitude will make the entire experience more pleasant for everyone.
So you are sitting in the billing department or at your kitchen table trying to recover from the shell shock of seeing a hospital bill that is north of $3,000 for tests you don’t remember taking and doctor’s you sure as heck don’t remember seeing. Another shock-hospitals and indeed the medical profession are businesses like any other. There is absolutely no reason or rule preventing you from sitting down with your doctor and going over each line of your statement. Not doing so can cost you, as a patient, hundreds if not thousands, of dollars in unwarranted and unnecessary hospital charges.
Oddly enough, patients have an unusual ally in the battle against incorrect hospital bills….their insurance companies. Insurance companies do not want to overpay either so reaching out to your insurance provider and going over your hospital bill and the charges in question could provide a valuable resource in minimizing your out of pocket expenses.
