How to repair graphic card cooling fan

The cooling fan is still the primary way of cooling computers, and you should know how to make service on it and avoid possible replacement or the need to buy a new one. Often happens that fan shaft collects dust mixed with grease that lubricates the shaft and the final result is slower spinning fan and buzzing or humming, and finally a complete stop of rotation. The most often problems are with the fans on graphics cards, then the power supply and the least problem is the fans for CPU and chassis. In most laptops there is only one fan for cooling the processor.

If the fan on the graphics card has started to produce an unpleasant sound, and roar, it is time for cleaning.  Most fans have a similar structure: the upper part of the paddle, middle shaft, tube and stator windings, on the lower side, the axle. Some fans have on axis of the upper and lower side light bands that serve as shock absorbers that prevent physical contact and protect against dust. There are fans with ball-bearings, the repair is more difficult and maybe impossible less effective mission.

Unscrew bottom of the card; there are 4 screws that hold the fan from above. Remove cooler; the problem with these cards is the cooler that is glued directly to the graphics chip, so we must be careful when we removing it. We can leave the computer turned on for some time to warm up the chip and glue softened or use a hair dryer to heat up cooler and then try to detach from the chip

Separate the plastic that holds the fan. Remove carefully small round plastic fuse in the middle of the plastic; it has cut in one place so it should be a little tense that can pop out. Be careful with it because if it flays away you will need magnifier from your tool box to find it. Draw out part with the paddle and dry it a bit.  Clean up thoroughly axis, with contact spray (or something similar).

Remove two small bands on the axle because they are easy to deform over time and may later cause problems, or the fan can still make noise. Store them in a safe because sometimes happens that they still had an important role in the fan (keeping distances between parts of the fan) so you will need to return them to the shaft if your experiment fails with new ones

Spray again; after you have thoroughly cleaned the shaft, the area around the shaft and the brass tube that goes through the shaft, the shaft and the tube should be again sprayed with contact spray that will act as lubrication. Another option is placing fine lubricating oil for lubrication of sewing machines, bicycles, or a similar lubricant. Pack back everything as it was and check how it works. The fan should be spinning normally and be quiet or at least significantly quieter than before.

The best option is to clean all computer dust with still unbeatable combination of vacuum cleaner and air compressors, but not those little “toy” compressor or spray with the air, but a real strong compressor for pumping tubes/ tires. This combination cleans virtually anything and the components will become clear as if they were just taken out of the box, but it is important to make sure that all parts of the computer are attached firmly otherwise the components will fly out of the housing. Instead of contact spray you can use fine lubricating oil for lubrication of sewing machines, bicycles, or a similar lubricant.
